The purpose of the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is to provide students with financial support, contribute to the student's general educational and employment experiences, and help carry out the day-to-day operations of the College. Job opportunities are varied, available on-and off-campus and often provide service to the community.
Eligibility for a Federal Work-Study award is determined from your completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form must be completed each award year and students must include work-study as the type of aid requested on the FAFSA. To be eligible for an award, a student must meet all eligibility requirements for FAFSA. A student must demonstrate financial need. They must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours to participate.
If you qualify for a Federal Work-Study award, you will be notified by means of a financial aid award letter. You cannot earn more than your award, nor can you work more than 20 hours per week. You will be paid for the hours you work at an hourly wage rate.
Students awarded by the college should complete an application (opens in a new window) online for a work-study position. Supervisors will contact potential students for hire. After an interview with the supervisor and approval from Human Resources, the student may work.
Note: Under no circumstances is a student permitted to work during scheduled class periods. If the student's class ends early or is cancelled, the student cannot report to work until the scheduled class time has ended. Failure to obey this Federal guideline can result in termination from the FWS Program.
Job responsibilities will vary by department. After you accept a position, you must report to work regularly and on time. You should call your supervisor directly if you will not be able to report to work. If you do not report to work and don't call your supervisor, or unsatisfactorily fulfill the requirements of your position, you may be dismissed from the Federal Work-Study program. Personal calls and meals should be scheduled before or after work hours. You should dress appropriately for the job.
In your work-study position students may have access to College and student records. Confidentiality of records must be maintained. Breaches of confidentiality and/or any act of dishonesty may result in dismissal from the program. Students are also required to complete a Drug Free Workplace Act form as a condition of employment.
Student use the Kronos Workforce Central System to report hours worked. Students will either swipe a card or log into Kronos on a desktop computer. Time is submitted on the 15th and the last day of the month. Students and their supervisors should approve the student's timecard on the last working day for submission to Payroll.
Pay checks must be picked up in the Cashier's Office. Work-study checks are available on the 15th and the last day of every month for the previous pay period.
Work-study students do not work when the College is officially closed. There may be other dates when work-study students are not allowed to work. Supervisors and students will be advised of any other dates.
