Welcome to Allied Health Sciences. This department includes associate’s degree and technical certificate programs designed to prepare you for licensure and employment right after graduation.

The number of students admitted to each program is limited. The academic requirements needed for admission to each program vary. Preference is given to students who exceed the minimum requirements for each program.

Allied Health Sciences students gain clinical skills at area medical centers, hospitals, and other health care facilities. Most classroom and laboratory instruction takes place on Southwest’s Union Avenue Campus.

Medical Lab Tech A.A.S.

Medical laboratory technicians are essential members of the health care team. They perform laboratory tests used in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease, and the maintenance of health. More medical laboratory technician information.

Physical Therapist Assistant A.A.S.

The physical therapist assistant (PTA) is a health care professional who is supervised by a physical therapist. The PTA works with a variety of patients who have been disabled by illness, accident or congenital handicap. PTA duties include helping the physical therapist implementing treatment programs an reporting the patient’s responses to therapy. Those treatments may involve exercise, manual therapy and hydrotherapy; and the use of heat, cold, electricity or sound. As clinicians, PTAs work in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, rehabilitation centers and outpatient independent practice settings.

Emergency Medical Services

Learn how to save a life! Pre-hospital emergency care is an exciting health care career in which you can serve your community. Southwest offers Emergency Medical Services programs of study that include Emergency Medical TechnicianBasic and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician as well as Paramedic. These programs will teach you how to give care for people in medical emergencies, as well as those with injuries. Radiologic Technology A.A.S.

Southwest offers course work leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology. The Radiology Technology Program is designed to prepare competent, certified radiographers to help meet entry level needs of the health care community. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the certification examination by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists®.

Laboratory Phlebotomy Tech Certificate

The Laboratory Phlebotomy Technician program provides quality instruction and learning activities appropriate for the discipline. The program recognizes the importance of professional competence and the obligation they have to provide well-trained health care professionals for the citizens of Shelby and Fayette counties and the surrounding Mid-South region. As a result, development of professional competence, personal growth and appropriate patient care are integrated into the curriculum.

Pharmacy Technology Certificate

Pharmacy technicians are critical members of the healthcare team and are essential to providing patients with safe and effective medication therapy. A pharmacy technician works closely with licensed pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in diverse settings such as hospitals, clinics, and community pharmacies. Pharmacy technicians provides technical and administrative assistance in the day-to-day activities of a designated pharmacy operation, assists in the dispensing of prescription pharmaceuticals, fills routine orders for non-prescription pharmaceuticals, and provides direct customer assistance and routine problem resolution to patients that are dropping off and picking up prescriptions. Pharmacy technicians coordinates the billing, cash management, and fiscal tracking operations of the pharmacy, and oversees inventory and data management activities, in support of pharmacy operations. The Pharmacy Technology Program partners with PioneerRx pharmacy software. PioneerRx enhances our curriculum with a hands-on approach to learning that simulates the functions and workflow in a pharmacy setting.
